Hey, there! I’m Riverfox, First Mate/Repairman of the , and I’ll be one of your Judges for ’s newest Dragon Persona Contest! Cheeko asked me to help out since I’m acting as unofficial leader of our little club that sprang up from her last contest while our captain and co-creator deals with life. (Or she may be raiding the #bowling alley, again, who knows?)
This contest is all about drawing a dragon personification of yourself that physically represents who you are. As an example (but really mostly because I love to gab), below I have written out some explanations for how the features I’ve given myself represent me. Hopefully this will help you, and if it doesn’t, hopefully you found it moderately interesting! (And if you don’t, then I can’t help you. Move along.)
DISCLAIMER: Please understand that you are NOT required to write super long explanations like this. I am a uniquely wordy person, and neither I nor my fellow Judges expect you to write extensive explications of your dragonsona. But at the same time, don’t be afraid to do so! It certainly won’t hurt your chances!
First off, I’m a Fire and Flight dragon (out of the three you’re allowed to pick). No Fangs (aka super strength) for me, but I do find what I have to be very handy!
Fire: I can secrete a very sticky glue-like substance from glands in my mouth. I can’t spit it very far, but it’s super handy in a practical sense (and for practical jokes 8D), especially since it hardens to the strength of concrete. The solvent is saliva, mainly so I don’t glue my own mouth shut, and I use it for all sorts of fun things: fixing holes in the Burninator, tacking up birthday decorations, fixing holes in the Burninator, a handy alternative to punching holes in my wings to make my shirt fit, fixing MORE holes in the Burninator, tricking a certain ninja into getting stuck to the wall, etc. (And yes, I’m the Repairman solely for this ability. I have no knowledge of actual woodworking whatsoever, but you’d be AMAZED what you can patch with glue that only dissolves when someone licks the boat, which happens with a surprising lack of frequency.)
How this personifies me: I like handy stuff, and I always strive to be as original as possible. Plus I’m always collecting stuff that I think might be useful without being sure HOW to make it useful; like with glue spit, the potential is there, but I don’t always know what to do with it.
Flight: Yeah, I can fly. Don’t expect much, though; flying is HARD, and while I love it, I’m not the most athletic girl you’ll ever meet (plus I’m lazy, let’s be honest here). Oh right, and I’m scared of falling, there’s that. So my flight muscles are a little underdeveloped. If I need to fly, I’ll glide, maybe muster enough power to flap for a little altitude.
How this personifies me: I love flying, but I really AM lazy and hard to motivate athletically. And I’m pretty positive I have a few talents (as well as muscles) that are underdeveloped due to my lack of initiative. But the POSSIBILITY that I’ll do something with them someday is still there. Design-wise, my wings are big and attach all the way down my back because I’m a stickler for “realism”, in the sense that I wanted to feel like they could actually support me in “real” life.
Other Features (and how they personify me in dragon form):
- The patches of big, chunky scales: despite my trying to make them look as cool as possible, this reflects more bad than good. I have a terrible habit of getting defensive and arguing my point when I should listen and think things through first. So the big scales and their obvious lack of real protection power against bodily harm sort of symbolize how my arguments don’t REALLY defend me much at all; I usually end up hurting myself more than anything. But the scales aren’t completely rock hard, because you can get through to me if I have time to think or my good ol’ guilty conscience kicks in. And I like defending and protecting other people, so they might have a little positive symbolism, too.
- Earfins: as you know if you’re entering this contest, one of the requirements is to give yourself some feature that shows your emotions. I chose making my earfins, and to some degree my wings, open and close (or rise and fall) depending on my emotions. I tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, as it were, so something as obvious as ear shifts seems fitting.
- Retractable foreclaws: just because it seemed handy, and who wants to scratch stuff up? Plus I really don’t like to hurt people.
- Orange skin: orange is one of my favorite colors, and I have always looked better in earth tones. Fun fact: blue is my OTHER favorite color, possibly more than orange, but I couldn’t make it look right on my dragonsona. Which is fitting, since I have a somewhat hard time finding blues that look good on my as a human. Eh, what can ya do. - The big claws and the snaggle fangs: these are cheating a little, because I mostly added them because they look cool. But they do have significance for me in that this is how I’ve always drawn anything remotely animal. I’ve been giving critters snaggle fangs like that since probably elementary school, so they have a special place for me, art-wise.
As for my outfit, well, hey, I AM the First Mate/Repairman of the Urban Pirate Dragons! The steampunk vibe is a new thing, because I’ve recently gotten into seeking out steampunk-inspired clothes ever since my sister bought me those steampunk goggles you see there for Christmas. But the patchy pants and bandanna should remind you that I’m still an urban pirate, just with a steampunk flair. And the lack of shoes probably shouldn’t count for anything, since most people draw their dragonsonas without shoes, but the simple fact of the matter is that I LOVE BEING BAREFOOT.
And that, I believe, is that! I hope this example was helpful to anyone out there looking for ideas. Good luck with creating your unique and personal dragonsona, and I can’t wait to see all of the cool designs that are sure to come!
